Traffic Blocking at the UW-Madison Campus Border

A brief list of the traffic filtering applied on the UW-Madison internet border routers.
This is the current ruleset applied at the campus internet border.  This ruleset is applied in both directions, inbound and outbound.

Blocked for both IPv4 and IPv6

  • deny tcp/udp ports 135-139
  • deny udp port 161
  • deny tcp/udp port 445

Blocked for IPv4

  • deny udp port 1433
  • deny udp port 1434
  • deny tcp to 224.0.0.0/4

Exceptions to these rules are very rarely made. Contact the Office of Campus Information Security (OCIS) for details.

Individual departments are responsible for maintaining their own firewall rules for traffic entering and leaving their department LANs.
