Office 365 - Download/Install Office 365

UW-Madison faculty, staff, and students can download and install the latest versions of Microsoft Office ProPlus through Outlook on the web. For complete details on the different versions (including licensing) of Microsoft Office available, please review Microsoft Office for UW-Owned and Personally-Owned Computers at UW-Madison.

Important: If you frequently travel to locations where internet access is not available for more than 30 consecutive days, you have the following options:

  • Departmentally owned computer: download the departmental version of Microsoft Office which requires activation every 180 days.
  • Personally owned computer: use a free office suite such as OpenOffice or LibreOffice as a backup.
  • To get the latest features/updates, it is recommended that you install the Office 365 version of Office/Outlook. The Professional Plus/2016/2019/Volume License versions are only receiving security updates.

Important

  • If you have Microsoft Visio or Project installed on your computer, please review the following document for special installation instructions: Microsoft Office, Visio, and Project Compatibility.
  • You will need administrator rights to your computer to install any software. If you do not have these rights, contact your local administrator. Also, make sure to update the software after completing the installation - this will ensure that your software is up-to-date for it most important security patches.

Note: If you have a previous version of Office installed, please perform a complete uninstall before installing the latest version.

Windows OS

Install Office 365

  1. Log into Outlook on the web.
  2. Click on the gear icon (Settings) and click Office 365 located under the "Your app settings" section.
  3. Within "Settings" section, click Software.
  4. Click Install button download/install. Important: Make sure to download the correct bit (32 or 64) version of the software that matches your OS bit version.
  5. Follow the prompts to install the software. You will be prompted to enter your account credentials (NetID/password) to activate the software.
    Note: During the configuration Office/Outlook, If you are prompted to "add this account to Windows", click skip for now.

Mac OS

Install Office 365 for Mac

  1. Log into Outlook on the web.
  2. Click on the gear icon (Settings) and click Office 365 located under the "Your app settings" section.
  3. Within "Settings" section, click Software.
  4. Click Install button for the desired application you want to download/install.
  5. Follow the prompts to install the software. You will be prompted to enter your account credentials to activate the software.
