One of the largest research collections devoted to North American history. Library holdings include an extensive genealogical collection--both published family histories and the source material used to create them--in print and microform. Periodical titles number in the thousands, including a large newspaper collection. Subject strengths in the general collection include labor history, women's history, and the history of ethnic minorities. The Library is also a depository for U.S. and Wisconsin government publications.

Archive holdings include films and film scripts, photographs, maps, papers of corporations and state agencies, and personal papers of prominent citizens. Registration is required to use archival collections, including films. Some films in the archives may be rented for UW classes.
