(608) 263-7400 -- Office of Legal Affairs
Monday-Friday 7:45 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
500 Lincoln Dr
Madison, WI 53706-1380
The Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs is Raymond P. Taffora.
The Office of Legal Affairs provides advice and counsel to the entire university community on any matter involving legal issues. These include personnel issues; contracts; medical malpractice issues; tax, environmental and constitutional issues; interpretations of local, state and federal laws; real estate matters; as well as all matters in controversy.
OLA is organized into five teams:
1. Business Services and Transactions
2. Employment Law
3. Health Law
4. Research and Intellectual Property
5. Student & Academic Affairs
OLA has an "open door" policy of access by employees of UW-Madison who have legal questions arising in the course and scope of their employment. Under the Wisconsin Supreme Court Rules regulating attorneys practicing in Wisconsin, OLA attorneys represent the university as an institutional entity. This is accomplished by providing representation to the university's employees acting on its behalf. This means that university employees dealing with institutional matters may seek advice and counsel without the need for a dean, director, or vice chancellor's approval (unless, of course, that dean, director, or vice chancellor insists). Personal legal advice is not provided.
OLA also works closely with a number of other offices, especially on personnel-related matters such as grievances, claims of discrimination, hiring, discipline, and termination. Among them are the offices of Human Resources, Employee Assistance, and the Equity and Diversity Resource Center. Staffing for certain standing committees is is also provided.
Individuals needing personal assistance may want to contact the State Bar of Wisconsin Lawyer Referral at 608-257-4666 or 608-257-3838.
