FP&M has assigned new covid room caps to General Assignment (GA) classroom space that allow for 6 ft of social distancing. For other department-controlled instructional spaces, departments should follow the advice below to estimate room capacity.
For rooms without much fixed furniture (including fixed seating) or equipment: New room capacity should be about 61sq ft per person. (Total sq ft of room / 61 sq ft = Room capacity)
For rooms that do have fixed furniture and room equipment: New room capacity should be about 75 sq ft per person (Total sq ft of room / 75 sq ft = Room capacity).
In addition to the guidelines above, departments should consider whether additional space is needed for students and instructors to be at a distance of at least 6 ft when they are at their seats or stations. There should also be appropriate space allowances if the course requires students to be moving around in a particular space.
