UW-Madison Zoom - Personal Basic Account Comparison with UW-Madison Default Meeting Settings

This document compares the default settings for Zoom personal accounts and UW-Madison Zoom default settings. If you have used a Zoom personal account, you may notice that your experience with your UW-Madison Zoom account is different due to the settings differences.


Your settings allow you to enable or disable features for your meetings. These settings control the availability of your meeting features, such as breakout rooms and chat. The UW-Madison defaults have been vetted and put in place by the UW-Madison Cybersecurity Office to support classroom use. People who are using UW-Madison Zoom outside of the classroom may want to adjust these settings to meet their needs.

All meeting settings can be adjusted by the user to allow for increased options, or to decrease participant actions during meetings. Users can change their meeting settings for all of their meetings, or they can adjust them on a meeting by meeting basis. Waiting Room

When participants join a meeting, place them in a waiting room and require the host to admit them individually. Enabling the waiting room automatically disables the setting for allowing participants to join before host.

Audio Type

Determine how participants can join the audio portion of the meeting. When joining audio, you can let them choose to use their computer microphone/speaker or use a telephone. You can also limit them to just one of those audio types. If you have 3rd party audio enabled, you can require that all participants follow the instructions you provide for using non-Zoom audio.

Mute participants upon entry
