Configuring Papers On A Macintosh Computer

To set up Papers 1, 2, or 3, use this handy link that Emily Wixson and the Citation Team have provided.

If Mac users receive an error, it is most often "Remote Access Error".   This has two possible causes.

  1. We've neglected to proxy the resource. If you determine this is the case, contact LTG here or fill out the form specific to the resource that pops up when the patron gets the "Remote Access Error"

  2. We don't proxy it because it's free or we don't subscribe to it

    • This happens because Papers proxies everything.   Fortunately in Papers 2, they added a way to add urls that shouldn't be proxied.
"View" / "Reload without Proxy" option for a one time "breakout" from proxy.

    • Or add it to the "Except for:" list in the "Papers" / "Preferences" / "Access" screen.

Authentication Issues

Steve Lowe,

I've replicated your problem, and I believe it to be a known issue we're
experiencing with use of the remote access within iOS applications such as

We are in touch with the DoIT staff responsible for the authentication system
used by our remote access system, and have made them aware of this issue.

For now, the best workarounds are to do one of the following when off campus:

1. Search resources using your iOS Safari browser and using the library web
site ( instead of Papers.

2. Continue to search for items in Papers when off campus, but wait to view
them until you're on campus (I know that's not a very good workaround).

We hope to have this issue resolved in the future, but as it relates to systems
external to the library (Papers is a commercial product, and the DoIT
authentication system is not under our control) we are somewhat limited to
address this issue.

Thank you for reporting this issue to us. I'm sorry we don't have a better
solution for you at this time,

Curran Riley
