IRB Efficiency Project
The UW IRBs recently launched a project to implement key changes to the IRB review process. Please see here for more information.
Recent ARROW Updates
The ARROW update at the end of May included various changes to improve the study team user experience, including;
- New questions in the submission form for initial review asking specifically about any needs for urgent approval
- Addition of a tool in the View Study Team Training activity allowing study teams to directly email anyone on their study team who has incomplete training certification
Workshops and Outreach Sessions
Revamped Consent Form Wizard
As many ED/SBS researchers know, the Consent Form Wizard is a tool to help ensure all federally required elements of consent are included. The ED/SBS IRB Office worked with IT to update the Wizard to be more user friendly and incorporate Revised Common Rule requirements. The new Wizard can be found here. Researchers have to log-in with their NetID to access the Wizard. This provides more security and allows more features to be available in the Wizard. Please note, the Wizard should only be used by researchers submitting to the ED/SBS IRB. If researchers are submitting to the Health Sciences IRB or Minimal Risk IRB, their consent templates, available on their website, need to be used.
The ED/SBS IRB office offers workshops throughout the year that are open to all faculty, staff and students. The following virtual workshops are planned for the Fall 2020 semester:
An Introduction to the IRBThis session offers an overview of the IRB process and procedures. This includes required training, working in ARROW, developing a protocol application and supporting documents, and the IRB review process.
September 24, 2020 @ 10-11am
Because this session is being offered via Cisco WebEx, registration is required. Registrants will receive a WebEx invitation the day before the event. Please register by September 22.
How to Avoid Delays in the IRB Approval ProcessThis session will address the most frequent errors seen by IRB Staff when reviewing protocol submissions and how to avoid them. Also, a checklist of items that can slow the approval process of a protocol submission will be reviewed.

This session will review, in detail, each of the consent processes that may be used when conducting research. Also, the most frequent errors seen by IRB Staff when reviewing consent forms and documents and how to avoid those errors will be discussed.

Given COVID-19, All workshops are currently being held virtually via WebEx so registration is required. Our office can also plan an outreach session tailored to your needs! An IRB staff member would be happy to come to a department meeting, research methods class, or hold a brown bag session to help faculty, students, and other researchers learn more about the process. We can also address specific topics such as international research, research on campus, qualitative research, research with minors, research involving social media or other new technologies, and more. - Drop-in hours are every Wednesday from 2:00-3:00 p.m. and Thursday from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Due to COVID, drop-in hours are being done via phone. Contact information is available here.
- IRB staff have 12-month appointments and are available for meetings/consults year-round. Individual appointments can be scheduled throughout the week. Contact an IRB staff member to schedule an appointment. Contact information is available here.
