Globus - Accessing ResearchDrive or SharedDrive Storage with Globus

This document explains how to access ResearchDrive or Shared Drive file storage with Globus. DoIT runs a Globus Connect Server Endpoint and ResearchDrive or SharedDrive storage can be accessed through the wisc-drive Globus Mapped Storage Collection. This article explains how to request access to the DoIT test Globus endpoint and access ResearchDrive or SharedDrive storage.

Note: a separate High Assurance Globus Endpoint will soon be available for accessing Restricted ResearchDrive or Secure Shared Drive storage for accounts involving restricted data like HIPAA or CUI.

Accessing ResearchDrive or Shared Drive File Storage with the wisc-drive Globus Mapped Storage Collection

  1. Login to the Globus website with your UW-Madison NetID username and password in order to create a Globus account.
  2. Email globusadmins@wisc.edu to request access to the wisc-drive Globus Mapped Storage Collection.

    globus login

  3. Connect to the Globus endpoint doit-rci-00025.doit.wisc.edu with ssh in order to create a kerberos ticket for your NetID to use to access your ResearchDrive or Shared Drive storage. Replace [NetID] with your NetID username and then enter your NetID password.
    • Linux: use the command the command ssh [netid]@doit-rci-00025.doit.wisc.edu.
    • Mac OS: Open Terminal and use the command ssh [netid]@doit-rci-00025.doit.wisc.edu

      ssh terminal

    • Windows: Open Powershell and use the command ssh -m hmac-sha2-512 [NetID]@doit-rci-00025.doit.wisc.edu

      ssh powershell

  4. Verify that you have a kerberos ticket for your NetID username by running the command klist in the ssh session then run the command exit to disconnect from the ssh session.

    ssh klist

    • You can use the command kinit [netid] to get a new kerberos ticket to extend the 7 day renewal limit.

      kinit netid

    • If your kerberos ticket expires, then you can get a new one by connecting to the doit-rci-00025.doit.wisc.edu endpoint again with ssh.
  5. Login to the Globus website with your UW-Madison NetID then access the wisc-drive Globus Mapped Storage Collection.
    • Collection: wisc-drive
    • Path: /mnt/researchdrive/[PI NetID] for ResearchDrive
    • Path: /mnt/shareddrive/[share] for Shared Drive
