Center for the First-Year Experience is a unit of the Division of Student Life. CFYE’s primary goal is to enhance academic and personal outcomes for new students by shaping a campus environment that encourages and supports positive academic and social engagement and learning.
CFYE offers a variety of programs designed to help new freshman and transfer students make the transition to UW-Madison. Major programs include Student Orientation Advising and Registration (SOAR), Wisconsin Welcome, and First Year Experience programs.
SOAR is an introduction to UW-Madison for new freshmen and transfer students. At SOAR, students meet with advisers, register for classes and learn about university resources. SOAR offers many sessions during the summer for those students who begin their studies at UW-Madison in the summer or fall terms, and two sessions in January for students who begin their studies at UW-Madison in the spring semester. Summer SOAR sessions include special programs for parents and guests.
Wisconsin Welcome activities occur just before and after the start of the semester. These free events are designed to welcome new students to UW-Madison. Activities in the fall semester are organized by hundreds of campus units, and activities in the spring semester are organized by Wisconsin Welcome Student Advisers.
