AWS accounts reaching campus networks and resources

Amazon Web Services (AWS) resources can be connected to resources on campus.

Connecting to Campus Resources

At this time, connecting to campus resources requires a consultation with the Public Cloud and Network Services teams.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) can place resources in a networking unit called a "Virtual Private Cloud".   VPCs can be configured to be able to reach resources that are normally only reachable from campus IP space (research drive / shared drive resources, for example).

Campus has established connectivity through AWS Transit Gateway to facilitate this type of connection without the need for running a VPN connection.

Please note that the specifics of your network setup as well as authentication methodologies will impact the feasibility of this type of connection.

Using Campus IPs for Applications

Resources run in Amazon Web Services cannot have a public IP that is within the commonly accepted campus ranges.   Private IPs can be established in campus space (see above) and specific routing established to achieve a similar effect in some cases.   This requires work with the public cloud team and Network Services to establish, and has limited availability.

Using wisc.edu Domain Names with AWS resources

A web application or resource does not need to be in campus IP space to establish a wisc.edu domain name.   See Network - DNS Registration FAQ for additional details.
Note that EC2 instances and other AWS resources often recycle IPs on service restart.    Before requesting a domain name, please implement an elastic ip or an elastic load balancer that will remain stable.
