Accessibility and usability barriers

The following information is provided to help people with disabilities know what potential barriers may exist within Tableau.

Screen reader navigation and auditory experience may be difficult for people with visual disabilities

  • Some buttons may read states or status changes incorrectly, confusing the user.

  • The screen reader navigation order on some data visualization regions may be confusing and out of order.

  • Data visualizations read as a collection of images that need to be labeled contextually. But some data visualization authors may be unaware of this and as a result, these images may not have alternative text. The screen reader may invite the user to open the “context menu” which appears to be the data table behind the visualization. These tables seem to be accessible and useful. However, if the content creator did not apply alt text to their images, the user will not know which table they are about to select to open.

  • Tableau pages have no heading structure on the page.

Magnification may be difficult for people with low vision

When magnified over 200%, the Tableau user experience does not reflow properly. As a result, users must horizontally scroll to reach all content. Any banner content at the top of the screen sometimes is too large and takes up much of the screen space that could otherwise be used for viewing.

Keyboard navigation barriers which may impact people with vision or motor disabilities

Some functionality is not reachable via keyboard navigation.
