Emergency rooms provide psychiatric and health assessments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Emergency rooms are designed to manage life-threatening illness and injuries. Examples of problems managed in an emergency room are: chest pain, shortness of breath, drug overdose, eye injuries, accidents and gunshot or knife wounds.

Fees usually charged, may be covered by health insurance. People should be advised to check out the coverage and stipulations of their specific health insurance carrier and/or HMO (Health Maintenance Organization). When they should be directed for assistance, if they need prior approval and financial coverage, is often dictated by the health insurance carrier/HMO.
