EMS Desktop Client Email Setup

This document goes through the setup to allow the EMS Desktop Client to send emails natively through Wiscmail.

Client

There are certain requirement to ensure EMS client can properly send emails via SMTP through Office 365

  1. Ensure the following System Parameters are set in the EMS Client (System Administration → Settings → Parameters → Desktop Client)
    1. Enable email Support = Yes
    2. SMTP - Use SSL = Yes
    3. SMTP Security Protocol = TLS
  2. Ensure Emails Settings (System Administration → Settings → Email Settings)
    1. Port: 587 (No matter what mode is being used this is a global settings that affects user level preferences)

Wiscmail Settings

In order for Users/Service Accounts to send email from Wiscmail the following settings need to be configured on wiscmail.wisc.edu/admin

  1. Ensure Password Security is Disabled (See: https://kb.wisc.edu/page.php?id=95580)
  2. Ensure SMTP is Enabled (In Https://wiscmail.wisc.edu/admin  Office 365 → Client protocols → O365 SMTP)

Personal Accounts

Customers wishing to send from their personal Office 365 accounts should be as follows:

  1. Setting is changed under Settings→Preferences
    1. Use Global Email Settings: Unchecked
    2. Mode: Authenticated Specific
    3. Server: smtp.office365.com
    4. Username: netid@wisc.edu
    5. Password: password
  2. Users account must be configured as a "Send As" user in Office 365 if sending from a service account or other address

Service Accounts

To setup a service account in the the global email settings (System Administration → Settings → Email Settings) 

  1. Service account email should be formatted as such NAME_DOMAIN@wisc.edu
  2. Ensure that the service account email password is explicitly set. Many use purely send as or linked accounts rather than access the account directly via the password.
