Research Cyberinfrastructure Cloud Consulting

Assistance with cloud computing for research
Research Cyberinfrastructure can consult with researchers (& their IT support) to use Cloud technologies (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud).
In close collaboration with the public cloud team, they can consult with you on what is possible, best practices and technologies for your research project. They can also help you navigate security and compliance considerations, if you have them. They can also engage with your department to discuss pros and cons of cloud technologies compared to relative to your current departmental IT strategy and offerings.
Lastly, they are also seeking to gather feedback on how cloud computing can enable researchers, as well as when it’s not a good fit, and where we can help you be able to focus more on research and less on technology. We would welcome discussion and feedback on these services as well as challenges and unmet needs.

Working with Departmental IT

Public Cloud platforms are supported by UW Cloud Services, a CIO-sponsored initiative to deliver public cloud computing services to UW-Madison faculty, staff, and departments.  These offerings focus on Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS) in the form of AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

Many departments and projects use public cloud resources similarly to on-prem infrastructure such as virtual machines and storage. We recommend you contact your local departmental IT staff for guidance on usage within your unit or department. Some IT departments have support resources who are already familiar with cloud accounts and can provide excellent assistance in the selection, setup and ongoing support for your projects in the public cloud.

The UW has many excellent existing computing & storage offerings, often specialized to a given discipline. Public cloud is not the best solution for all needs, but we are happy help with the "wayfinding" and analysis regarding technology options, and will work closely with your departmental IT to meet your needs.

Regardless of the solution you choose, the UW public cloud team is interested in understanding how you want to leverage public cloud services and in any feedback you have so that we can share the feedback with our vendors & peers in higher education, and continue to improve our services.

Please Contact the Public Cloud Team with any questions or issues, or feel free to attend our weekly office hours to learn more about how we can help.
