The minutes for the meeting of October 31, 2022, were approved with one correction.

Andre Phillips, Director of Admissions and Recruitment, and Derek Kindle, Vice Provost for Enrollment Management, presented an overview of UW-Madison admissions. UW-Madison applications have increased greatly. The last three years have seen an increase in the diversity of the incoming class. Growth in the number of applications continues this year where we are on track to increase applications by 10%.

Bill Karpus, Dean of the Graduate School, announced a 10% raise in graduate student rates for the next fiscal year. He thinks stipends should be at the median or above of our Big Ten peers and right now, we are below. In addition, living costs have increased in Madison.

Karl Scholz, Provost, provided information on TOP hires and retention and promotion. The data for this group of faculty mirror the non-TOP hire group.

Provost Scholz and the University Committee discussed the article about the letter from the graduate students in the Economics department. The letter asks the department to set an example for peers and the department chair has responded favorably.

Kacie Lucchini Butcher, Director of the Public History Project, gave background on the project coming from recommendations of the 2018 Klan Report. The project began in 2019 and are working towards a set of final products including the Sifting and Reckoning exhibit at the Chazen. There are also curricular materials available. There will be a process guide produced as a final report for the project. Reception of the website and exhibit has been very positive. They are conducting 150 visits with courses, departments and community groups this semester.

She discussed the future of the project and the exhibit. In order to permanently house the exhibit, they need about 3000 square feet. She would like to continue the program and has received support from various parts of shared governance.

Papp motioned, and it was seconded, to convene in closed session pursuant to Wis. Stats. 19.85(1)(c) and (f) to discuss a personnel matter at 3:01.

Papp motioned to reconvene in open session at 3:14. It was seconded and approved.

Papp adjourned the meeting at 3:14.
