WiscChat (Web) - Creating/Joining a Chat Room

The jabber protocol contains the ability to sustain many people in a "virtual chat room." Different clients allow you to connect in different ways, but the name of the conferencing server is always the same - conference.wisc.edu.

Note: Users from third party systems (like AOL, MSN, Yahoo!) cannot enter WiscChat chat rooms - only WiscChat users can. WiscChat does not have a hierarchy within the chat room area. All chat rooms are created at the same level.

Chat rooms can be made persistent, public or private, and password protected.

Follow these procedures to create/join a chat room:

  1. Within your roster window, click on the 'Join Groupchat' button.

    The join room screen is displayed:

    You are now able to: create and join a new chat room, or enter into an exiting chat room.

  2. To search for and join an existing chat room:

    1. Within the join groupchat screen, click on the Open Search button.

    2. By default, the search server will default to the same domain as your account. If you need to search a different domain, then enter that in the field (conference.doit.wisc.edu). When you are ready, click on the Search button.

    3. Select (highlight) the room within the result list and click on the Join button. A new window will open for the conference room and you will automatically be entered as a member.

  3. To create and join a new chat room:

    1. Within the join groupchat screen, enter the desired information: Nickname *: your identity within the room Room **: any name you want or the name of an existing room
      Server ***: conference.wisc.edu
      Password: if the room requires a password
      * Nickname will be what others see you as within this chat room.
      ** Room name can only contain the following characters: letters, numbers, dash, and underscore.
      ** Server name may need to be modified to the specific domain you are creating/joining into: i.e. conference.doit.wisc.edu.

    2. After you have filled in the necessary information, click on the Join button. You will be presented with the following popup:

    3. Click on the Cancel button. A new window will open for the conference room and you will automatically be entered as a member.

      Note: You can modify the room settings after the room is created.

To make any configuration changes, click on the Config button.

To invite others to the chat room, click on the Invite button and select the users you want to invite.
