WiscVPN (Windows) - Connecting with the WiscVPN AnyConnect Client

This document describes how to establish a connection to WiscVPN with the AnyConnect VPN client software on a computer running Windows XP, Vista, 7, or 8.

IMPORTANT: These instructions have been written for the latest version of the WiscVPN AnyConnect client. If you are still using the previous version, it is strongly recommended that you upgrade now. The current version is compatible with all supported versions of Windows and Mac OS X and can be downloaded from http://wiscvpn.doit.wisc.edu.
  1. To launch the Cisco client:
    1. Windows XP, Vista, and 7: Click on Start > Program Files (or All Programs) > Cisco.

      Open the Start menu and search Programs Files to find the Cisco client.

    2. Windows 8: Press the Windows key to open the Start Screen, then begin typing Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client until you see the program appear on the left. Click on the program to launch it.

      Go to the Start screen and search for the Cisco client.

    3. The VPN Client will start. The server name should already be filled in; if it is not, type wiscvpn.doit.wisc.edu into the text field. Click Connect to proceed.

      Verify that wiscvpn.doit.wisc.edu is entered in the text field, then click Connect.
    4. After a few moments of processing, the main window will display the message "Awaiting user input."

      The main window will say Awaiting User Input.

      A second window should have appeared with fields for the Group, Username, and Passcode. Your default connection entry should be selected by default. Use the dropdown menu for Group: to change the connection entry if necessary, then fill in your username and password and click OK to connect.

      Choose your connection entry, enter your login credentials, and connect.

      • Group:
        • IP-pool: dynamic IP
        • IP-pool-OffCampus: dynamic IP, split tunneling
        • IP-static: static IP
        • IP-static-OffCampus: static IP, split tunneling

        Note: When you are on campus, you should connect using one of the OnCampus profiles. Similarly, it is recommended you use one of the OffCampus profiles when you are connecting from off campus, though there are exceptions to this (i.e. you need to ensure that network traffic bound for an off-campus location is encrypted).       • Username: NetID username
      • Passcode: NetID password

        Note: those using a static IP will have received a separate username, which is normally your NetID with an underscore and a one added to it, such as bbadger_1. These users will still enter their NetID passwords to log in.

    5. Once connected, the AnyConnect window will disappear. You should see a message reporting the successful connection briefly appear in the lower-right corner of your screen, and the program icon should be visible in your system tray.

    6. To disconnect from WiscVPN, double-click on the AnyConnect VPN client icon in the Windows System Tray and select Disconnect from the main window.
