UW Digital ID (Win) - Problems Downloading Certificate via Internet Explorer 8

This document outlines a work around for downloading and installing a digital certificate in Internet Explorer 8.

Background

Internet Explorer 8 includes a filter that helps protect against Cross Site Scripting (XSS) attacks. It uses heuristics to detect such attacks and sanitizes injected scripts. This filter can also impact legitimate applications, such as the application which enables the download of your University of Wisconsin-Madison digital certificate. In order to enable the one time download of your digital certificate in Internet Explorer 8, we suggest that you temporarily disable the Cross Site Scripting (XSS) filter before you download your digital certificate, and then enable the XSS filter immediately after you complete your digital certificate download.

Turning Off the XSS Filter

  1. Go to Tools then Internet Options.
