Enterprise Storage Outage Schedule

In an effort to provide longer advance notice to campus, and to ensure our ability to get needed maintenance windows, the DoIT Enterprise Storage Team is scheduling major outage windows for tier 2 and tier 3 storage twice a year for the foreseeable future. These recurring windows will make it simpler for users to schedule their critical activities to avoid this important maintenance window. All outage windows are from Sunday 5AM to Sunday 12PM (noon) local time.

Note that tier 1 storage is not affected in these windows.

  • We have a weekly window from 6AM until 10AM Sunday for less intrusive work.
  • In some circumstances we may still need to schedule maintenance outside of these windows.

Campus Long Term Recurring Outage Windows

These windows are from 5AM to 12PM on Sunday mornings.
  • Summer - Third Sunday of August
  • Winter - Third Sunday of February.

DoIT Enterprise Storage Service

The Enterprise Storage Service consists of SAN equipment, cabling and storage servers that make up the DoIT Storage Service. Tier 2 and tier 3 storage consists mostly of the the following:
  • Storage arrays from multiple vendors.
  • Various Brocade SAN switches in the DoIT data center.

What we do in these windows

Mostly the windows are used for upgrades to the internal system code on the storage arrays, or the SAN swithes. Vendors provide new features, patches for bugs and fixes for security problems. In order to benefit from these changes and to stay supported, we need to reload the system software. Additionally we may upgrade hardware, add new devices that affect campus services as a whole and perform other maintenance that has some risk of affecting campus within these windows.

The DoIT Storage Service is commited to taking reasonable steps to keep the campus community informed of what we are going to do in each window. Not all windows are used. If you have any questions feel free to contact the NOC and ask if anything is currently planned. Note that plans can and do change with short notice.

Do we use all of the window?

In general no, but we cannot predict how a particular upgrade will go, and so we reserve a window larger than what we expect to need. Some upgrades may not require an outage at all, but the potential for an outage while doing this work is always present, so we must be prepared for it.

How does the DoIT Storage Service attempt to minimize the impact?

The general process is as follows:
  • We wait until code has been reasonably well deployed through a vendors customer base, and the vendor reports the code as being stable.
  • Where possible, we install the upgrades on storage equipment that has the least impact on campus should something go wrong. If the code proves stable for a minimum of a week, we place it into limited production.
  • If that code proves stable for a minimum of one week, we move the code to the remaining production storage systems.
  • All storage mirrors are verified as being in sync prior to doing any code upgrades. In the event of a major problem servers can be switched to use their mirrored storage, but this is not a quick or seamless change.
