Psychology Department Undergraduate Awards

The UW-Madison Psychology Department has several awards available for undergraduate students made possible through generous gifts from alumni and friends. A committee of Psychology faculty and staff will review applications and select the successful candidates. Sigma XI Grants in Aid of Research

Sigma XI, the scientific research society, offers grants of $500-$5,000 for graduate applicants and $500-$2000 for undergraduate applicants in aid of research in science or engineering. Membership is not a requirement, and students from any country are eligible. See http://www.sigmaxi.org/programs/giar/index.shtml for more information.

Wisconsin Hilldale Undergraduate/Faculty Research Fellowships 

The Hilldale Undergraduate/Faculty Research Fellowship provides research training and support to undergraduates. Students have the opportunity to undertake their own research project in collaboration with UW–Madison faculty or research/instructional academic staff. Please Note: Graduate students are ineligible to serve as the project advisor. Approximately 97 – 100 Hilldale awards are available each year. The awards provide a stipend of $3,000 to the student and $1,000 to the faculty/staff supervisor to help offset research costs. Students must have at least junior standing at the time of application.The Holstrom Scholarships require an environmental focus. The application deadline is generally in early to mid February.

Wisconsin Idea Undergraduate Fellowships

Wisconsin Idea Fellowships are awarded annually to undergraduate student projects working towards addressing a challenge identified along with a local or global community partner. Fellowships are awarded to semester-long or year-long projects designed by an undergraduate student (or group of students) in collaboration with a community organization and a UW–Madison faculty or academic staff member. Projects can receive up to $7,000 in total funding and students receive 3 academic credits. Student recipients are also invited to present their work at the Undergraduate Symposium in the spring semester.On average, 5 – 10 fellowships are awarded every year. Two special fellowships each year are specifically dedicated to social entrepreneurship as well as the opportunity gap in Madison. The priority deadline is late in January.Scholarship and Grant Information

NIH Undergraduate Scholarship Program

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Undergraduate Scholarship Program (UGSP) offers competitive scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral, and social science health-related research. The program provides up to $20,000 per academic year in tuition, educational expenses, and reasonable living expenses to scholarship recipients. Scholarships are awarded for one year and can be renewed for up to four years. In return, scholars must commit to two NIH service obligations for every year of scholarship support. Scholars will spend ten weeks during the summer following each year of academic support, working in an NIH research laboratory. After graduation, scholars will spend one year for every year of support as a full-time employee conducting research at NIH. Scholars are paid for work during summers and after graduation. Each scholar will work directly with an NIH Principal Investigator or an NIH postdoctoral fellow, who will serve as mentors. The application deadline is usually in early April.
