Moodle - Problems Viewing Files

UW-Madison is adopting Canvas as the single, centrally supported learning management system, and discontinuing support for Desire2Learn (D2L) and Moodle. Access to D2L and Moodle will permanently end June 1, 2018. For information about retaining materials from D2L or Moodle, please refer to this document.

Students are having trouble viewing PDFs or other files

File viewing within Moodle can sometimes be troublesome for users. This is because the Moodle PDF/Document viewer sometimes conflicts with the type of file the user has uploaded. Other issues may arise if the file type cannot be read by a specific type of browser. However, these issues can be avoided.

When adding a link to a file on your site, make sure that all the configuration settings are specified correctly. The most important setting that deals with this issue is the 'Force Download' setting within the 'Options' section of the configuration page. Make sure this setting is selected as shown below.

The 'Force Download' setting ensures that the file does not reside within the browser itself. Instead, when the link is clicked, the file is downloaded on to the user's machine and viewed using resident software. This makes sure that there are no cross-browser compatibility issues or problems with certain browser plug-ins.

As long as the users have the proper software to view the files, they will be able to view them after saving the files to their computers.
