Device and Printer Management - Windows 7

The Devices and Printers folder gives you the ability to change some settings and look-up information for devices attached to the computer either physically or through a network, such as flash drives and CAE printers.

The Devices and Printers folder can be found on the right-hand side of the start menu. You will see an icon for every device attached to the computer, often displayed as a photo of the exact model of the device.

Every printer the computer is currently able to print to will appear in the Devices and Printers folder. You will not be able to print from this window, but by double-clicking on one of the printers, you will be able to change certain printing preferences for that specific printer.

Settings such as number of pages per sheet, orientation (landscape or portrait) or number of copies to be printed can be changed. Any settings changed here will apply to all printouts sent to this printer from the time of the change. Note that if you want to change the default paper size, only Letter (8 1/2 x 11) and tabloid (11 x 17) are available on CAE printers, with some printers only being able to print Letter size.

Setting Default Printers

If you want a certain printer to always be selected by default, open the Devices and Printers Management, right-click the printer you want to set as your default printer and select "Set as default printer." The change will be indicated by a green check mark next to the default printer.

Other Devices

Devices such as flash drives will also appear in the Devices and Printers window when inserted into the computer. Right-clicking the icon for the device will give you all the available options for that device such as safely ejecting the flash drive or browsing the files on the flash drive.

You can also select the option to "Make a Shortcut" to place an icon for the device on the desktop. Right-clicking on this icon will allow you quickly browse the files on the flash drive or safely eject it while it is inserted into the computer.
