L&S Appointment Levels for Short-term Instructional Staff (STS) and Lecturer Student Assistants (LSAs)
This document lists appointment levels for Academic Year short-term instructional staff (STS) and lecturer student assistants (LSAs) in the College of Letters & Science. This page was updated in February 2025.
Short-term instructional staff (STS) and lecturer student assistants (LSA) appointments are based on the credit/contact time for a course, regardless of the instructional title. Instructional tasks accounted for in the Full Time Equivalent (FTE) include supervising student assistants, holding office hours, and course preparation/grading, etc.

Special Situations:
- LSA appointment levels may be supplemented with professional development.
- TLA should be consulted to determine the appropriate appointment level for STS instructors or LSAs teaching three courses in a semester, courses involving field research, instructors with appointments in multiple departments, or instructors with significant non-instructional duties.
