WiscWeb CMS - Working with Groups in Server Manager

This document explains what groups are used for, and how to work with them within the CMS.

Groups are helpful in setting up workflows and authorization packages in the CMS. They provide a level of abstraction for settings that might require authorizing content before it is published, disallowing access to a portion of the site to a certain portion of the people, etc. This abstraction involves having a group for different roles on the site (e.g. an administrative group, an editing group, etc.), so that settings do not have to be made on an individual person-by-person basis.

Even if a single person has a distinctive function on the site, it may make sense to make a group for him or her – if s/he leaves the department at some point, it is much easier to add their replacement to a group than to redo all of the settings for that person.
