Frequently Asked Questions by Instructors

How do I scan paper assignments into Gradescope?

If you are using Gradescope to grade a paper-based assignment, you will first need to scan your submissions. There are slightly different procedures for scanning assignments, depending on the assignment type you are using. For more information, see these Gradescope Guides:

Can more than one person grade at once?

Yes. Gradescope will automatically split up the work among the graders. You can grade the same assignment or same question at once.

  • If multiple people are grading at once, all graders need to use the Next Ungraded button (or ‘z’ keyboard shortcut) to move from submission to submission. This will lock that submission, so that only one grader can work on it.

  • Graders always use the same rubric for each question. If the rubric changes during grading, all other graders on that question will see a notification message which will tell them what has changed on the rubric.

Can students submit revisions or request a regrade?

Yes, if you allow it in the course.

Are there any best practices for teaching with Gradescope?

Yes. You can find best practices in Gradescope - Best Practices for Teaching [UW-Madison]

Frequently Asked Questions by Students

Why can’t I open my assignment?

If you see an error message when you open the Gradescope assignment, you may need to wait for your instructor to release the assignment to students.

Can I unsubmit or resubmit assignments on Gradescope?

Once you submit your assignment in Gradescope, you need to contact your instructor if you need to make changes or unsubmit. Or, if your instructor allows multiple attempts for the assignment, you can submit a second copy to Gradescope.

I’m running into a problem when I try to submit an assignment.

Most Gradescope problems can be solved by clearing your browser cache and cookies. For other issues, see: Troubleshooting Submission Upload Issues – Gradescope Guides

When will my grades become available?

Once your instructor grades your assignment, you will get a notification that your grades are ready to view. If you see this notification and still cannot view your grade, contact your instructor.

Can I submit my assignment after the assignment deadline?

Gradescope does not allow students to submit assignments after the deadline. Please contact your instructor if you need to make a late submission.

Why does Gradescope say I ran out of time when I try to submit assignments?

If you are submitting a timed assignment, the timer begins when you start, and cannot be paused. Gradescope will notify you that an assignment is timed when you begin, and also has an on-screen timer, which can be hidden if you prefer. For more information about timed assignments, see Submitting timed assignments – Gradescope Guides

If you are submitting an untimed assignment, this may happen if you submit a file very close to the due date/time, and the due date passes while you are uploading the file. This is uncommon, but may happen if you have a slow internet connection or a large file to upload.
