Cloudability - Overview (Cloud FinOps tool)

Cloudability is UW–Madison’s cloud cost-management and optimization platform. It provides a single place to view, analyze, and report on spending across AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud. Departments, IT teams, researchers, and finance contacts can use Cloudability to understand their cloud usage, monitor costs, and make data-driven decisions.

Accessing Cloudability

Who Uses Cloudability?

Cloudability is designed for:

  • Account Owners / Technical Admins – to track usage, identify cost drivers, and plan budgets.

  • Department Finance & Budget Officers – to view spending across multiple cloud accounts

  • Researchers & Project Leads – to monitor their project-level costs and avoid over-spending.

  • Campus IT departments – to help manage multi-cloud resources across distributed teams.

What You Can Do in Cloudability

Cloudability includes several tools that help users understand and optimize cloud costs.

Dashboards

  • Visual summaries of cloud spending, usage trends, and key performance indicators.

  • Dashboards can be shared within your department or team.

  • Role-specific views (e.g., Executive Summary, Monthly Cost Review, Project Spend Tracking).

Reports

  • Flexible reports that allow filtering by cloud vendor, account, project, tags/labels, service, etc.

  • Useful for monthly reconciliation, forecasting, or granular service-level analysis.

  • Reports can be scheduled for automatic delivery via email.

Cost Recommendations

Cloudability analyzes your cloud usage and surfaces optimization opportunities such as:

  • Rightsizing underutilized compute resources

  • Identifying unused storage or snapshots

  • Reviewing purchase recommendations (committed use, savings plans, reservations)

These recommendations help reduce unnecessary spend and improve budget predictability.

Alerts & Notifications

Alerts notify you when costs exceed thresholds or show unusual patterns.

Examples:

  • Daily spend spikes

  • Costs exceeding project budgets

  • Sudden increases in storage or network traffic

  • Anomalous spending

Alerts can be configured for an individual account or across multiple accounts within the same billing customer id.

Budgets

Cloudability supports budget tracking for cloud projects

You can:

  • Create monthly or annual budgets

  • Track spend against budgeted amounts

  • Trigger notifications when nearing limits
