SIS - Instructor Assignments: Determining Instructor Roles

This document provides step-by-step guidance on determining instructor role assignments.

Overview

This document provides a decision tree related to instructor role assignments in SIS. Refer to SIS - Instructor Assignments: Guidelines and Considerations for essential definitions and additional details.

Determining the Range

The first step in determining instructor role assignments is confirming the course's range.

The steps vary depending on whether the course is a Range 1 or a Range 2 or Range 3.

  • Range 1: Section numbers 001-299
  • Range 2: Section numbers 300-599
  • Range 3: Section numbers 600-999

Once you've determined the range, continue on to the appropriate section below.

Range 1 Sections

  1. How many total instructors are there?
    • If only one, proceed to step 3.
    • If more than one, proceed to step 2.
  2. How many principal instructors are there?
    • If only one, proceed to step 3.
    • If more than one, proceed to step 4.
  3. Is the instructor qualified?
    • If yes and there is only one instructor, there must be one principal instructor.
    • If no and there is only one instructor, there must be one principal instructor, and one supervisory instructor must be added. A Range 1 principal instructor who is not fully qualified must be supervised by a qualified instructor.
    • If yes and there are multiple total instructors, there must be one principal instructor and one or more auxiliary instructors.
    • If no and there are multiple total instructors, there must be one principal instructor and one supervisory instructor. There may also be one or more auxiliary instructors.
  4. If there are multiple principal instructors, is at least one of them qualified?
    • If yes, there must be multiple principal instructors and may be one or more auxiliary instructors.
    • If no, there must be multiple principal instructors and one supervisory instructor. There may also be one or more auxiliary instructors.

Range 2 or Range 3 Sections

Note: Supervisory instructors are not needed for Range 2 or 3 sections, because Range 2 and 3 instructors who are not fully qualified are understood to be supervised by the qualified instructors assigned to the associated Range 1 sections.

  1. How many total instructors are there?
    • If only one, there must be one principal instructor.
    • If more than one, proceed to step 2.
  2. How many principal instructors are there?
    • If only one, there must be one principal instructor and one or more auxiliary instructors.
    • If more than one, there must be two or more principal instructors and may be one or more auxiliary instructors.
