Learn@UW - Sort Order for Courses and Semesters in List of Semesters

This document describes how courses and semesters are sorted in the "My Courses" widget.

Special characters are sorted first, followed by digits (0 to 9), and letters (A to Z, a-z: case insensitive).

Special characters likely to be used sort in this order:

 #  (pound sign)
 $  (dollar sign)
 (  (open parenthesis)
 )  (close parenthesis)
 *  (asterisk)
 .  (period)
 @  (at sign)
 _  (underscore)
 ~  (tilde)
 +  (plus sign)

Leading hyphens or minus signs ( - ) are ignored; the sort order is determined by the second character. If the second character is a space, it sorts first in the list.

Therefore, with a low to high sort order set, any entry with with a hyphen and a space added to the beginning will rise to the top of the list.

For example, adding a hyphen in front of  SEM.II.2011-12  to make it  -SEM.II.2011-12  will not put it ahead of  SEM.I.2011-12  or  SEM.II.2010-11  but adding a hyphen and a space to make it  - SEM.II.2011-12 will.
