Course Guide - New Features
Course Guide has introduced some new search features and Course Guide Plans are now integrated with the College Scheduler release.
College Scheduler Integration
The Enrollment Section of the Registrar’s Office has teamed up with College Scheduler to offer our students a tool to assist them with the scheduling of classes that ties directly into both their Student Center and Course Guide Plans. The Schedule Planner is available to students only.
Students can launch the Schedule Planner application from the Student Center main page, Course Enrollment – Add page in Student Center and the Plans tab in Course Guide – Manage Plans. The Schedule Planner is a web based class scheduling system that ties directly into the students’ enrollment shopping cart within the Student Center and allows students to create and manage their own schedules. Students can build optimized class schedules that take into account their personal needs (work, athletics, leisure, etc.)
Course Guide Enhancements
The Course Guide has some new features that will make it easier for students to find the courses they are looking for, and help instructors get the word out about the content of the courses that they are teaching.
Searchable Instructor Provided Content
Oftentimes, the official course description and course title are lacking when it comes to describing what is actually taught in the course, what topics are covered, expected outcomes, and class format. The Course Guide team now offers a way for instructors to provide course content information to the students. Instructors can provide a variety of information via the Faculty Center such as Instructor Course Description, Typical Topics/Schedule, Keywords to assist in searching, Class Format, Learning Outcomes, and URL links to Additional Resources.
By selecting the ‘Include Instructor Provided Content’ criteria along with a term in Course Guide, this information is included in searches, allowing students to find courses more relevant to the keywords entered.
To view the Instructor Provided Content associated with a class, click 'show sections' on a course in your search results, then click the small red person icon under Additional Info.
Thematic Course Groupings
Course Guide has also provided a way to find courses that have a similar theme or focus on a particular area of study. The new Thematic Course Groupings criteria allow the students to find those courses that are potentially offered across multiple departments but share a focused theme. The available course groupings are Animal Behavior, Neuroscience and Qualitative Methods with plans to expand the available groupings at a later date.
Special Group Types
Our SOAR and first year student population will appreciate the new values available in the Special Group Types area. Users of Course Guide can still find courses with sections that are tagged as First Year Interest Groups, Residence Hall, or Service Learning, but we have expanded the selection to now include First Year High Impact Classes and Common First Year Classes.
