SSL Certificate Service

Overview of Server Certificates

UW-Madison is a participant in the InCommon Certificate Service, which entitles campus staff to unlimited server (SSL) certificates at no cost. The InCommon certificate service is paid for and managed by the Office of Campus Information Security (OCIS). In addition, DoIT offers personal digital certificates (UW Digital IDs) for signing and encrypting email, as well as certificate authentication.

GeoTrust certificates issued prior to November 2010 will continue to work. Customers can replace them with InCommon/Comodo certificates, before the GeoTrust certificate expires.

Please note, OCIS can issue certificates for only those servers under the wisc.edu, wisconsin.edu, and uwsa.edu domain names. It is possible that OCIS can issue certificates for other domains if UW Madison is the administrative manager for that domain. Please contact OCIS to discuss. Alternatively, certificates can be purchased directly from Comodo or another commercial certificate authority.
