Winter 2010

Updates for IRB Members
When will IRB members begin using ARROW?
ARROW will go live with a small number of study teams in March 2010, so most IRB members will begin using the system in April 2010.  ARROW is expected to be fully implemented by Fall 2010.

How will the IRB review process change for IRB members?
ARROW will bring several significant changes to the way IRB members conduct their reviews, such as:
  • All application materials and supporting documents (e.g., consent forms, study protocol) will be available online for IRB member review
  • IRB staff will be able to direct specific questions to primary and secondary reviewers, which IRB members can then respond to online
  • Although PRS (preliminary review session) will still occur in the IRB office, IRB members will provide their review notes online
  • IRB members will receive email notifications when they are assigned to review a particular study
  • The IRB "file" for new studies will be available online (including a detailed history log) and will be viewable by IRB members
What types of training will be offered for IRB members?
The HS-IRBs Office is committed to making the transition to ARROW as smooth as possible for IRB members and will offer several types of training:
  • IRB staff will conduct small group sessions and meet one-on-one with IRB members to provide a thorough overview of the system
  • When an IRB member comes to the IRB office to do PRS, IRB staff will provide details about how to complete PRS reviews in ARROW
  • Several online videos will be available to show in detail how IRB members can work in ARROW
  • IRB staff will be available prior to each IRB meeting to meet with IRB members who would like additional assistance
What can IRB members do to help prepare for ARROW?
IRB members can help IRB staff make the transition to ARROW a smooth one by doing the following:
  • Be sure you know your UW-Madison NetID and password, which you will need to log in to ARROW
  • IRB staff will conduct small group sessions and one-on-one training with IRB members, so please help us with scheduling by responding promptly to requests to arrange these sessions
  • You will need Adobe Acrobat to read many documents uploaded to ARROW, so please make sure you have it installed or updated
  • Get the latest ARROW news by subscribing to the HS-IRBs listserv (email
