## Learn@UW - Settings for Variables in Arithmetic Quiz Questions Must be Consistent

The combination of the values for 'Step' and 'Decimal Places' for variables in an Arithmetic (2+2) quiz question must be consistent.

For each variable, the value specified for 'Decimal Places' should be greater than or equal
to the number of decimal places used in the value of 'Step'. For example, if 'Step' is 0.1 or 0.5, 'Decimal Places' should be at least 1.

Inconsistent combinations of the 'Step' and 'Decimal Places' settings for variables in an Arithmetic (2+2) Quiz questions are not trapped and can result in problems. A quiz question may be generated where the correct answer entered by a student taking the quiz is marked incorrect.

This is a known issue.

For example, suppose a quiz question has a variable with 'Step' set to 0.5 and 'Decimal Places' set to 0. A student taking a quiz could see a quiz question "What is the average speed of a train to the nearest tenth of an MPH if it covers 160 miles in 5 hours" when the value 4.5 was generated for the hours variable. The student should answer 32 but the application would flag it wrong calculating that the answer is 35.6.
