suppressing signature in thunderbird

Make Thunderbird signatures behave like Outlook signatures. Thunderbird by default follows internet standards, one of which is tagging the signature line. Many clients, including Thunderbird, will grey out the tagged signature text so that it will not take focus away from the email content.

1. Tools | Options (Windows)
Thunderbird | Preferences (Mac)
Edit | Preferences (Linux)
and then

2. Select the Advanced tab, General sub tab, and click Config Editor button

3. Click the "I'll be careful, I promise" button
4. In the "Filter" text box, type signature_separator and press enter
5. The long list of options will change to one result mail.identity.default.suppress_signature_separator
6. Set the value to True
Right click on mail.identity.default.suppress_signature_separator and select "Toggle"
repeat as necessary until it is Toggled to True

7.  Quite and relaunch Thunderbird.  The signature will no longer have the -- or be invisible flagged as a signature.  This behavior mimics how Outlook handles signatures.
