Moodle - Posting Images, Videos, and Audio Clips

UW-Madison is adopting Canvas as the single, centrally supported learning management system, and discontinuing support for Desire2Learn (D2L) and Moodle. Access to D2L and Moodle will permanently end June 1, 2018. For information about retaining materials from D2L or Moodle, please refer to this document.

Step-by-step instructions on how to post images, videos, and audio clips.

Posting images

1. In an HTML editor in your Moodle course, click the Insert/edit image button, which appears as a mountain.

2. If you'd like to insert a picture from an internet page, copy and paste the URL under Image URL

3. If you'd like to upload a picture from your own computer or an image repository, click Find or upload an image. To select a picture from your own computer, click Choose File. Otherwise, select from your options on the left panel.

4. To adjust how the picture will appear on your page, you can explore the appearance and advanced tabs (shown in the picture above). There are settings for image sizing, padding, borders, and style. You can also have the picture change to something else once a user scrolls over the picture.

5. Once you have finished, click the Insert button.

6. To edit the settings on a picture you have already inserted, highlight the picture and press the same Insert/Edit Image button.

Posting an audio file

1. First, turn editing on by clicking the Turn Editing on button at the top right corner of your course homepage.

2. In the desired week/topic, click on the Add a resource drop-down menu and select File.

3. Give the link to the audio clip a name at the top of the page and click the Add button in the top left of the Content section to add a file.

4. Find or upload your audio file, and then click the Upload this file.

5. Click the Save and return to course button at the bottom of the page.

Embedding audio or video

NOTE: To embed a video into a course, the video must be in Quicktime file format(mp4).

In an HTML editor in your Moodle course, click the Moodle Media button (next to "Insert/edit image").

Inserting videos from video sharing sites

1. Go to the video sharing site of your choice and find the video that you would like to insert into your course.

2. Find and copy the embed code. Its location will vary by site, but it is usually associated with the video’s information or a “share” option. It also may be available by right-clicking on the video and selecting Copy embed code. For detailed instructions on how to get embed code in Kaltura MediaSpace, click here Kaltura - How to Get Embed Code in MediaSpace (UW-Madison).

3. Go to the HTML editor of the resource or activity in which you would like to embed the video and click the Edit HTML Source button (appears as "HTML"). You may need to expand your HTML editor options by clicking the top left button in the HTML editor.

4. Find the location within the HTML code that you want your video to appear, and paste the embed code that you copied.

5. Click Update.
6. Once you have finished, click the Save and return to course button at the bottom of the page.
