The Independent Learning program's general mission is to make general-education requirements as accessible as possible. Unlike most distance learning programs, UW-Extension Independent Learning offers students the opportunity to enroll in a course at any time during the year and take up to a year to complete it. Because Independent Learning courses do not run on a traditional semester schedule, students can complete courses at their own pace. Courses are offered both online and in print. While the Independent Learning program does not offer degrees, Independent Learning courses can be transferred toward a degree at any institution. Depending on the course desired, individuals who are not currently students can enroll as special students.

Many of the program's 125+ courses have been developed by and are taught through the UW-Madison Division of Continuing Studies. Course subject areas include: Business; Education, Health & Teacher Certification; English & Humanities; Ethnic Studies; Foreign Language; Math & Science; Social Science.

For specific courses within each subject area, see the Course Listings PDF.
