[ay15-16] Moodle- Managing Groups/Groupings

Managing groups in Moodle 2.8, 3.0

1. First, click Edit Settings under the "Administration" block.


2. Under "Groups," change "Group mode" to either Separate Groups or Visible groups.

  • Separate Groups: Each group member can only see their own group, others are invisible
  • Visible Groups: Each group member works in their own group, but can also see other groups

3. Next, go to the Groups page by clicking on the Groups link under "Users" in the "Administration" block.

4. Notice that the default groups on the left are the sections that you associated with your course when you first set up your course page. By clicking on one of these groups, you can see all the participants that have been automatically placed in this group in the box on the right.

5. To create a new group, click the Create group button.

6. In the group settings page, give the group a name and, if you wish, a description and picture, and then click the Save changes button.

7. To add people to a group, click on the desired group, and then click the Add/remove users button.

8. You will see a list of all potential users, or anyone that is enrolled in the course. To add a person to the group, select the name of the desired user, and click the Add button. You can select multiple users by holding down the Ctrl (Command on Macs) key and clicking multiple names. 

9. To remove a user you have added, follow step 7 and select Remove after you have selected the desired user.

10. When finished, click the Back to groups button to save changes.

Managing Groupings

A Grouping is a group of groups and can be used to edit behavior or restrict access on activities for different groups throughout the course. To edit groupings:

1. Select the Groups link under "Users" in the course administration block.

2. Select the Groupings section at the top of the module

3. To add a grouping, click the "Create grouping" button and specify how you want to name and describe the group.

4. Once the grouping is created, you can add groups to the grouping by selecting the icon that looks like a couple people on the right side. From here you can add/remove groups. When you're done, you can click the 

5. The gear on the right side lets you edit the name/description of the grouping and the X next to it lets you delete it.
