Moodle - Creating a Quiz
This article goes through instructions on how to create a quiz, adding questions to the quiz, FAQ, and information about group and user overrides in quizzes.
Creating a Quiz
1. First, turn editing on by clicking the Turn editing on button at the top right hand side of the page.
2. In the desired week/topic, click the Add an activity and select Quiz, then hit Add at the bottom of the window.
3. General: Give the quiz a name and a description in the first and second fields respectively.
4. Timing: Use the "Open the quiz” and “Close the quiz” settings to control when to give students access to the quiz and when to close access to the quiz. Use the other “Timing” settings to control how long students can take to complete a quiz and how many attempts are allowed.
5. Grade: Select which grade category the quiz grade will be placed in the gradebook. Also select the number of attempts allowed for each student on the quiz and the method the quiz will be graded(i.e. Last attempt, average of attempts, etc.).
6. Layout: Use the “Layout” settings to choose how many questions to display per page and whether or not to rearrange questions or possible answers to questions.
7. Question behaviors: Select whether to shuffle each part of a question randomly when students take the test. Also select how questions behave. In “Adaptive mode” under Question behavior-- "How questions behave" drop down menu, students can immediately submit an answer to an individual question, receive feedback, and attempt it again if they answered it incorrectly. Incorrect answers will receive a penalty determined by the “Penalty factor” that you specify in each question’s settings.
8. Review Options: Use the “Review options” checkboxes to indicate what information should be revealed to students and when it should be revealed.
9. Appearance: You may select whether a student's picture is shown on the screen while attempting the quiz. You can also change the way the quiz is graded overall and by question by adjusting "Decimal places in grades."
10. Extra restrictions on attempts: An option to require a password to take the quiz is offered here. You may also restrict a quiz by an I.P. address. More information on that can be found here. You may also enforce a period students must take before they can attempt the quiz again.
11. Overall Feedback: You can give overall feedback for the quiz using the “Overall feedback” fields and specifying a corresponding grade boundary(i.e. student receives the message "Good job" for grades between 100% and 95%). Make sure that one of the “Overall feedback” boxes in the “Review options” settings is checked if you want students to see overall feedback.
12. Common Module Settings: Here you may select the group mode for the quiz and if the quiz is visible to students right away. An ID number for the activity may also be entered. This number will be used as a way to identify the quiz for grade calculating purposes.
13. Restrict Access: Access to the quiz can be restricted to only a certain time period here. Also a grade requirement from another activity may be set.
14. Activity Completion: Tracking the completion of the quiz can be done here.
15. When finished, click the Save and return to course button to return to your course homepage or the Save and display button to enter the quiz and add questions to it.
Adding Questions to a Quiz
1. Click the link to the quiz that you would like to add questions to.
2. Click the Edit quiz button in the middle of the page. If the quiz already contains questions, you can click the Edit quiz link in the "Settings" block as well to add more questions or remove current ones.
3. To add a question, click Add on the right hand side where you want the question and you can choose to create a new question or to take one from your question bank. If you choose to add questions from your question bank, you can import many questions at once by checking the boxes and clicking Add selected questions to the quiz.
4. You can also add random questions from a category. To do this, click Add and click a random question. You can then choose which category and how many questions.
NOTE: If students have already attempted a quiz, you will not be able to edit the questions on the quiz. If you would like to edit the questions after students have attempted it, you will need to delete the attempts by clicking on the attempts as shown and deleting them.
1. First, find your quiz and click on it to get to the quiz overview page. Then, click the link that says Attempts in the top middle of the page.
2. Change Attempts from option to "all users who have attempted the quiz" and click Show report. Then, click Select all at the bottom and click Delete selected attempts to delete every attempt taken on the quiz. If you only want to delete certain attempts, change the search settings to find those attempts and delete them once you find them by checking the boxes next to them and clicking Delete selected attempts.
FAQ: Quiz Timeout During Attempt
If a student is actively working on a quiz at the quiz deadline, the work that has been done to that point is automatically submitted, even if you have chosen "Attempts must be submitted before time expires, or they are not counted" in the quiz settings. If that setting is chosen and the student in not working on the quiz at the deadline, then a setting of "Never submitted" is assigned.
"Attempts must be submitted before time expires, or they are not counted", may lead you to believe that if the quiz closes while the student is actively working on it, their already submitted answers will not count. However, the "?" associated with the "When time expires" setting spells it out clearly:
"This setting controls what happens if the Student fails to submit their quiz attempt before time expires. If the student is actively working on the quiz at the time, then the countdown timer will always automatically submit the attempt for them, but if they have logged out, then this setting controls what happens."
It is sometimes necessary to give specific students or groups extra time on a quiz or a different deadline than the rest of the students.
This can be accomplished by setting "User overrides" or "Group overrides" on a quiz.
To do this:
- Go into a previously created quiz
- Click Edit Settings in the administration block
- Find the restrict access subsection and click Add restriction
- You can create a restriction using a variety of parameters
