CAE Managed Wordpress Vhosts
This document briefly describes the CAE Managed Wordpress Virtual Hosting Environment
Along with the other varieties of virtual host (vhost) types (eg: php, perl, html, etc.), CAE now offers a managed Wordpress vhost. In this model, CAE maintains the base Wordpress code and themes so that you can focus on managing your site's content rather than securely keeping a separate Wordpress codebase install and database functioning and up to date.
To use this service, a faculty/staff member can simply use the tools at https://my.cae.wisc.edu/tools/account/vhosts/ to create a vhost of type "Wordpress". Then go to the site you made to complete the installation (eg: by setting the site's name and your login info). From there, all management interactions for the content and look and feel for your site are expected to be done by through the admin web interface (eg: wp-admin). If you do not see a link to create a vhost, you will need to have your professor or advisor request a vhost for you.
Since CAE manages the Wordpress installation, for security and scalability reasons, we do not expose direct filesystem access to your Wordpress instance's site specific files (eg: wp-uploads) or database. In particular this means that you cannot install custom themes by yourself.
If you have a theme or plugin or some other Wordpress extension that you would like installed, please contact
firstname.lastname@example.org and we will install it for everyone using the CAE Managed Wordpress service to use.
Please note that in order to allow the system to scale, we tend not to track the most current version of Wordpress, thus some plugins and themes may not be completely compatible.
