L&S Chairs & Summer Service
Service as department chair does not require service as chair of the departmental summer sessions. L&S department chairs (and directors of large programs) receive a temporary base adjustment equivalent to 1/9th of their academic year salary when they become chair. This temporary base adjustment is considered compensation for the additional and time-consuming responsibilities performed during the academic year, as well as for those occasions when they are called upon during the summer to provide service. At the end of a term as chair, the temporary base adjustment is removed effective with the start date of the upcoming contract period. Summer salaries for faculty who have served their final year as department chair will be based on the previous academic, full-time academic year rate.

The Summer Sessions chair (or others providing administrative support during the summer) does not receive a temporary base adjustment. The departmental chair may serve as Summer Session chair, however, so long as total summer compensation does not exceed the campus limits.
