D2L - Creating a New Widget (UW-Madison)

UW-Madison has adopted Canvas as the single, centrally supported learning management system. Access to D2L and Moodle permanently ended on June 1, 2018.

This is a legacy document which will be permanently removed from the UW-Madison KB space as of June 29, 2018.

This document describes how to create a customized Widget (tools in a frame) in a course homepage.

To create a new widget:

1) In the Navigation Bar, click on the Course Admin drop-down menu and select Edit Course.

2) Click on Widgets.jpg.
3) Click on the CreateWidget.jpgbutton.
4) Give the new widget a Name (description is optional, but is visible when adding the widget to a homepage).
5) Click on the Content tab. Enter any customized html code that you wish to appear in the widget box.
Use the Advanced tab for more editor options.  You may treat the widget as any "content" pages and type directly, add pictures or videos             without using HTML code.

6) Click on PreviewWidget.jpgto view what the widget will look like in your course.
7) Optional: You may choose to conditionally release your widget to users who have satisfied certain conditions. Choose the Release Conditions tab and click CreateandAttach.jpg. Select the appropriate condition from the Condition Type drop-down menus, then click Create.jpg. To add additional conditions, choose AttachExisting.jpg, then select a category from the View Conditions for: drop-down menu. When finished, click Attach.jpg.
8) When finished editing the widget, click saveandclose.jpg.
