Moodle - Student-rated Forums
A way to allow students to rate each other (but not themselves) on discussion forums. The method has been used as a way for students to evaluate the practicality of potential topics for projects.
Issue: How can I involve students more in forums?
This KnowledgeBase article will show you how to alter a forum to allow different types of users (such as students) to rate other users' posts. This can be useful when students are looking for feedback on things like potential project topics.
Create/Edit a Forum:
The first thing that must be done is to edit the existing forum. If the forum has not yet been created, you can do this by choosing Forum from "Add an Activity or Resource". Then edit the forum, particularly the "Aggregate Type" and "Scale," by first clicking Edit settings under "Administration."
Activate Forum Ratings:
After that, in your Moodle course page, under the "Settings" column on the left is a heading for "Forum Administration." Click on Permissions. After scrolling to "Activity: Forum" there will be a subheading called "Rate Posts" where you can click on a gray box with a + sign. Click on the + sign in the center column (permissions) and add students. It should be noted that on the right side there is also a + sign for restrictions which should be avoided.Student Permissions
Students will be able to rate posts not written by them. These ratings will be updated live (similar to a Facebook 'like') and students will not need to submit their ratings or save the page.
