WiscVPN - Problems Connecting to a Static IP

This document explains what to do if you have registered for a static IP address through WiscVPN and received the confirmation email that your IP address is ready, but you cannot connect to the correct IP with the WiscVPN client software.

Problems connecting to a Static IP are normally caused by:

  • Using your normal NetID to log in instead of your modifiedNetID
  • Not noticing that your modified NetID is case sensitive(login must be entered in all lowercase letters)
  • Using one of the standard connection profiles instead of theStatic profiles
  • Already being logged into WiscVPN on another system

To verify that you are using the correct profile and log in:

  1. Open the WiscVPN client.
  2. Verify that either the IP-static or IP-static-OffCampus profile is selected for the Group dropdown menu entry.

  3. Enter the modified NetID you received withyour Static IP confirmation email. Use your normal NetIDpassword. The modified NetIDs all take the form "NetID_number" and must be entered in all lower case.Since one user can have more than one static IP, the numberindicates which IP will be used, eg. bbadger_1

If you have confirmed that you are using the correct profile andyour modified NetID to log in, but are still not getting yourstatic IP, check that you are not logged in already on anothercomputer. One IP address cannot be shared by multiple computers.

If you are still unable to access your Static IP with your modified NetID, contact the DoIT Help Desk for assistance. The Help Desk can check the list of currently assigned Static IPs to see if your Static IP address is correctly associated with your NetID.

If your static IP is not listed with your NetID, then it has expired, and you will have to register for a new static IP address.
