General guidelines for using Skype and other instant messaging applications.
Ensuring a successful Skype
Exchaning contact information is key to successful Skype call. Make sure at least 24 hours in advance that you and your Skype partner exchange contact information within the Skype application.
Planning ahead allows both sides to contact their respective tech support if there are installation or contact information issues prior to the event.
Using Skype to Videoconference (panel interviews, etc.)
Skype was not intended to be used as a conference call medium. It is an excellent product for one to one communication. With multiple people, they need to sit further back from the camera, making them a lot smaller in the picture and may also complicate sound broadcasting. We've found that in most cases this can still work pretty well, but there are some tradeoffs. Our hardware has been set up to take these concerns into account and minimize them, but the remote site may not have the provisions or ability to account for all of the variables. However, most of the times, the problems are very minor.
Tech staff are available between the hours of 7:00 AM and 4:00 PM weekdays year round, and additionally in the evenings from 4:00PM to 8:00PM M-Th during Fall and Spring semesters and able to help setup or answer questions about Skype and instant messaging. If the conference can be scheduled during that window of time, tech staff stand ready to assist.
