Bucky Backup - Download, Install, and Configure the Bucky Backup Client (Windows)

This document explains how to download, install and configure DoIT's Bucky Backup client, Lite, Archive, or Enterprise for Windows.

NOTE: This KB doc is being replaced by KB 80307. Please update your bookmarks.

There are 3 basic steps you must complete before you can start using the Bucky Backup Client (Lite or Enterprise):

Note: This document assumes you have already registered for Bucky Backup. If you have not done that yet, please see: Bucky Backup - Getting Started.

  1. Download the Bucky Backup Client
  2. Install the Bucky Backup Client
  3. Configure the Bucky Backup Client for the First Time

Download the Bucky Backup Client

  1. Download the latest version of the Bucky Backup client for Windows:

  1. Double-click on the Bucky Backup client you just downloaded. This will open the extraction wizard.
  2. Accept the default location by clicking Next.


  3. After all files are extracted, you will be prompted for a language to run the installer in. English is the only supported language. Click OK.


  4. The install wizard will open. At the welcome screen, click Next.

  5. At the Destination Folder section, click Next to accept the default install location.

  6. At the Setup Type section, select Typical and click Next.

  7. Click Install.


  8. Click Finish.

Configure the Bucky Backup Client for the First Time

  1. Open Start --> All Programs --> Tivoli Storage Manager --> Backup-Archive GUI.

  2. At the TSM Client Options File Configuration Wizard, click Next.

  3. At the Options File Task section, select Create a new options file and click Next.
    • Note: If you are an existing Bucky Backup user, you can import from an existing options file.

  4. At the TSM Client Node Name section, enter the Node Name you received via email when you registered for the Bucky Backup service. Click Next.

  5. At the TSM Client/Server Communications section, choose TCP/IP and click Next.


  6. At the TCP/IP Options section, enter your Bucky Backup Server Address and Port Number, which you received via email when you registered for the Bucky Backup service. Click Next.
    • Note: The Bucky Backup servers and associated ports are:

  7. You will have the option of modifying other settings, but please just accept the defaults for now and click Next at the Recommended Include/Exclude List and Common File Exclusion Selection sections. On the Domain for Backup section, it is recommended you check Back up all local file systems or you can select the locations you want to back up and click Next.

  8. At the Confirm and Apply your configuration section, click Apply.


  9. The TSM Login window will prompt you. Enter the password you used when you registered. Click Login.
    • Note: If you don't remember your password, please contact the DoIT Help Desk.

  10. Click Finish. You will then see the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager window.

  11. The next step is saving your password. In the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager, click Edit --> Client Preferences. In the Authorization tab, choose the Password Generate radio button. Click OK. For detailed instructions on how to save your password please see: Bucky Backup - Basic Administration.
    • Note: You do not have to save your password, but if you are away from your computer/server when the backup begins the backup will not run until you enter your password. It is recommended that you save your password.
  12. The last step of the configuration process is to configure the scheduler. In the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager, click Utilities then Setup Wizard.

  13. At the Welcome section, choose Help me configure the TSM Client Scheduler and click Next.

  14. At the TSM Scheduler Wizard, click Next.

  15. At the Scheduler Task section, choose Install a new or additional scheduler and click Next.

  16. At the TSM Scheduler name and location section, accept the default TSM Scheduler Name and make sure to uncheck Use the Client Acceptor daemon (CAD) to manage the scheduler. Click Next.

  17. At the Option File Name and Location section, accept the default Option File Name and click Next.

  18. At the TSM Authentication section, enter the Node Name and TSM Password you used when you registered. Make sure Contact the TSM Server to validate password is checked. Click Next.
    • Note: If you don't remember your password, please contact the DoIT Help Desk.

  19. At the Service login options section, select The System account and Automatically when Windows boots. Click Next.

  20. At the Log file names and locations section, accept the defaults for Schedule Log and Error Log. Click Next.
    • Note: It is recommended to enable event logging.

  21. At the Start Option section, choose Yes and click Next.

  22. At the Confirm and Apply your configuration section, click Apply. This may take a few moments to complete.


  23. Click Finish.


  24. To verify that the Bucky Backup scheduler is configured correctly, open the file \Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\baclient\dsmsched.log in your favorite text editor. Look at the bottom of the file for information like this:

  25. The important thing to look at is the “Server Window Start” information. Your next scheduled backup will start between then and 2 hours from then. If things don’t look right, please call the Help Desk at 264-HELP (264-4357).
    • IMPORTANT: Make sure you leave your computer turned on and the TSM Client Acceptor service running during the time that you backups are scheduled to occur. The Acceptor will start the Scheduler service when the backup starts, and stop it when it finishes.
