D2L - Limiting Student Access to a Course (UW-Madison)

UW-Madison is adopting Canvas as the single, centrally supported learning management system, and discontinuing support for Desire2Learn (D2L) and Moodle. Access to D2L and Moodle will permanently end June 1, 2018. For information about retaining materials from D2L or Moodle, please refer to this document.

Students can be restricted from accessing a D2L course by editing its start and end dates or by using the Active? feature.

By Date

To restrict access by date, use the start/end dates. Please note that shortly after a semester's ending, student access to courses is automatically closed.

  1. In the navigation bar, click Course Admin and then Edit Course in the drop-down menu.
  2. Choose Course Offer Course Offering Information.
  3. Check Course has a start date and Course has an end date, then choose a Start Date and an End Date.
  4. The course default is none, which means the course is available to enrolled students. A future Start Date may be selected to effectively close access to the course until that date. In a semester-long course, leaving the End Date unchecked will close student access to the course shortly after the semester is over.
  5. When done, click save.jpg.

By Active Setting

It is also possible to restrict student access by checking and unchecking the Course is active setting in Course Offering Information.

  1. In the navigation bar, click Course Admin and then Edit Course in the drop-down menu.
  2. Choose Course Offer Course Offering Information.
  3. Check the Course is active box to give students access; uncheck to remove student access.
  4. When done, click save.jpg.
