For systems that require an InCommon Silver Certified NetID and password, you will be prompted to change your password before gaining access.

What are InCommon Silver Credentials

InCommon, operated by Internet2, provides a secure and privacy-preserving trust fabric for research and higher education institutions, and their partners, in the United States. InCommon serves nearly 6 million end-users through federated identity management.

InCommon Silver certification requires. Credentials with hard to guess authentication Secrets and better Credential management, reasonably well verified personal information about each Subject, unique Subject identifiers, and secure business and operational processes.

At UW Madison your NetID credentials can be used as InCommon Silver credentials as long as you have:

  1. Presented official government identification when you received your UW-Madison Photo ID
  2. You are following the UW-Madison Password policy
  3. Your password has not been misused

Campus and federated service may require InCommon Silver credentials. Services like WiscMail and Learn@UW do not require that InCommon Silver credentials are used. This means if your NetID falls out of compliance with 1 or 3 above you will still be able to authenticate to these services.
