WiscWeb CMS Standard Template Content Classes - Events List

Events List

There are several types of calendar event content areas in the CMS Standard Template. This KB document is about the Events List (see Daily or Weekly Calendar and Monthly for the others). There are two kinds of event objects one can put on an Events List: single event objects and event objects that reference an external event (e.g., an event listed on the University's today.wisc.edu website).

As with the Daily or Weekly Calendar this Events List is not a true calendar like WiscCal or Google Calendar. It is an object in the form of a calendar to which other objects are added (i.e., events). They, too, are objects 'associated with' the Events List in a logical sense but not in any time-based sense. There is NO mechanism for importing events from other calendar systems or calendar data files. Each event must be created and managed one at a time.

  1. Open the Page
    open page
  2. Click on Manage Center Blocks
    manage center blocks
  3. Click on Create and connect page
    create and connect page
  4. Select the Events List content class
  5. Type a Headline for the Events List
  6. Click OK
    OK
  7. You will now see options for editing the Events List properties and Manage List contents.
  8. If you want a title displayed for the Events List you MUST enter a List Title, otherwise the event objects will be shown listed with no heading above the list. To edit the Events List properties, click on the Reddot next to [Edit Configuration] to see a form using which you can modify the Events List properties
  9. Click OK when done

Add Events to the Events List

To add events to the Events List at this time:

  1. Click on RedDot for Manage List
    manage event list
  2. To edit events, scroll down to the Edit ... sections below. To add, continue to next step.
  3. Click on Create and Connect Page (yes, Create and Connect Page)
    create and connect page
  4. Here is where you select either an internal event object Event Page or an External Event. Their properties are slightly different. If you've added events to either of the other calendar classes, then selecting Event Page will look quite familiar. Click on Event Page
  5. Type event title in Event Title: field
    calendar edit headline
  6. Click OK
    OK
  7. The new event will be listed beneath the [Manage List] heading
    calendar edit headline
  8. Continue this process for more events. If you do not wish to modify any of the event object properties, click on the close reddot next to the Events List name
    calendar edit headline

By default, the event object is put on the day you create it (e.g., if "today" is August 8th, the new event object goes on the Events List on August 8) with the time set at the time you create it. To modify event object properties, see the Edit Event Object Properties below.

Add External Events to the Events List

To add an event object for an external event (i.e. an event shown or listed on external website like the University's UW-Madison Events Calendar), follow these steps, making sure that you have the appropriate information for the external web site (e.g., its URL, etc.).

  1. Click on RedDot for Manage List
    manage event list
  2. Click on Create and Connect Page (yes, Create and Connect Page)
    create and connect page
  3. Click on External Event
  4. Type an Article Title for the external event.
    events list external event title
  5. The new event you just added will appear in the list below Manage List.
events list external event in list
  6. Continue this process for more events. If you do not wish to modify any of the event object properties, click on the close reddot next to the Events List name
    calendar edit headline

Edit Event Object Properties

To edit date/time and other event object properties:

For Events Saved in the CSM System
  1. Click on the event title in the list of events under the [Manage List] section
    events list under manage list
  2. Click on the open Reddot next to the title name
events list internal event edit reddot
  3. Click on the Red "Edit Elements via Form" Dot next to the event title to edit
events list internal event form reddot
  4. A form will open on which you can edit all of the desired event properties. Most of the properties are set with values entered in a single field. Editing the Description and Contact Info properties are done in a Text Editor form to allow more control over the entered information. Event object fields are: Headline, Full Day Event (Yes/No), Date (Required), End Date, Start Time, End Time, Location, Description, Web Site URL, and Contact Info

  5. Clicking on the edit icon (the pencil) on Date and End Date propertes will bring up a Set Date window using which you can indicate the date of the event. NOTE: the monthly view lists Monday in the first column of the display. Click on OK after selecting the date.
    events list set date property
  6. Click OK to exit the Edit Elements via Form window
    OK
  7. When done editing the event object, click on the RedDot at the upper left of the display next to the event title
    events list close event properties
  8. At this point, you will not be taken back to the Manage List page. You must click on the Back to ... link (arrow in the snapshot below). Once the page loads go back to the Add Events to the Events List section in this document to continue editing event object properties.
events list return from event edit
For External Events
  1. Click on the event title in the list of events under the [Manage List] section
event list external event in manage list
  2. A new page will open. The styling of this page may seem strange at first as it looks nothing like your site (see image). This is because the link is to an external web site and the CMS system, and your web site's style, can have no affect on the link destination. The link itself on your site's page will be styled according to your site's style, but the page that opens when a visitor to your site clicks on the link will, of course, use its own styling. To edit the external event link, click on the Edit Reddot.
event list edit external event properties
  3. Now click on the Form Reddot to gain access to the External Event's properties
event list edit external event via Form reddot
  4. An Edit Elements via Form window will open using which you can edit Headline, External URL (you should already have this; it is required, naturally, for an External Event), Start date (also required), End date, Location, and Event Description.
event list external event properties form
  5. The two External Event required properties
event list external event required properties
  6. Clicking on the Pencil icon next to the Date form field will bring up a Set Date window. Note that Monday is in the first column.
    event list event date properties
  7. Click OK when done.
    OK
  8. You'll be returned to the Edit External Event window.
    event list external event properties.
  9. Click on the Close Reddot to exit the editing section.
event list clost event list properties
  10. At this point, you will not be taken back to the Manage List page. You must click on the Back to ... link to get back into the primary CMS system and from there re-enter the edit process. Once the page loads go back to the Add Events to the Events List section in this document to continue editing event object properties.
event list return from event edit

To manage events in an existing Events List open the page on which the Events List resides, then jump to the section Add Events to the Events List above to continue editing event object properties.
