AOF stipends are paid biweekly; pay schedules are available on the campus Human Resources website: https://hr.wisc.edu/pay/
Setting up appointments
- Early May: CGRS (AOF) Appointment/Award Letters for incoming and continuing students will be created by L&S CGRS and sent to Departments/Programs to distribute to students.
- Early August: Departments will receive funding string and are responsible for entering fellowship appointments.
- Mid-August: Tuition Remission and Third-Party Deferral: Departments are responsible for processing tuition remission and third-party deferral for AOF recipients.
- Welcome Payments for incoming Fellows only are administered by the Graduate School and disbursed in late summer.
Note: Departments must terminate the Fellowship upon graduation if the Fellow graduates before their fellowship appointment ends and notify us. Fellowship appointments are not to be continued past graduation or graduates will be responsible for repayment.
Starting August 2024, all CGRS fellowships were extended to 12-month appointments.

New for 2024-2025- Departments that have AOF-funded CGRS students will be responsible for processing a third party deferral with the Bursar Office to pay tuition for those on AOF fellowship. Out of state fellows will also need to have non-resident tuition remission processed as well. Send copies to cgrsadmin@ls.wisc.edu when submitting documents to the Bursar Office to record with the CGRS Office.
The tuition remission (aka tuition waiver) removes the non-resident portion of tuition from the amount owed and the third-party deferral pays the tuition bill on behalf of the student. Both processes are managed by the Bursar Office. If questions relate to the process itself, please contact the Bursar Office.
Overview of New and Recent CGRS Program Changes for 2024-25 Cohort

New: Nomination deadline for incoming Fellows: February 26th, 2024 at 5 pm. Applications must be submitted by the nominating department only.
- Departments will be limited to 4 nominations for incoming new Fellows.

Submission deadline for continuing PhD fellows to request 2nd year of fellowship starting Fall 2024: February 1st, 2024.

New: Earlier deadlines for PhD students for achieving dissertator status (*) in order to be guaranteed 2nd year the following fall semester: April 30th, 2024 for Fall 2024 and March 1st, 2025 for Fall 2025.

New: Mentor training expectation for faculty advisors starting in 2024.

New: CGRS programming will be expanded to welcome all L&S AOF-eligible incoming students in Fall 2024.
(*) Note: For our purposes, this refers to the date when the student completes all of their program's requirements for advancing to candidacy or becoming a dissertator, not when the Graduate School formally confers dissertator status.
