The Institute for Biology Education is a unit under the UW-Madison Provost's office that works across and beyond campus to improve biology education, with an emphasis on increasing the engagement of populations that are underrepresented in science.

Programming for UW-Madison undergraduates in the biological sciences focuses on supporting them in their transition to UW-Madison and their first year and engaging them in beyond-the-classroom experiences such as research, international study, leadership, learning communities, career exploration, and public service.

Other programs and initiatives include teaching & learning support for UW-Madison faculty and instructional staff, support for interdisciplinary initiatives, training for future faculty, professional development for K-12 educators, outreach in K-12 schools and after-school programs, K-12 curricular reform, and pre-college and undergraduate summer research experiences.

WISCIENCE encourages whole-person, whole-life learning in science—learning that goes beyond the boundaries of any classroom or campus. This requires innovative programs, resources, and collaborations that help sharpen the tools for scientific inquiry while connecting them with real-world situations. Innovative excellence in science education not only improves the practice of science, it also contributes to a more informed and active citizenry and a flourishing plane
